Welcome to EK Unlocked...

...our new feature charting Greater Manchester's transformation and how the property industry has made its mark.

We're telling the story of Greater Manchester's reinvention, through in-depth articles and videos, reflecting on the role that planning has had - and is continuing to have - in shaping the city.

Let us tell you a story...

It's a story of progress, people and place. The original modern city has its humble beginnings in the Industrial Revolution but has continued to reinvent itself in every generation.

It's on this foundation of heritage that Euan Kellie Property Solutions is built.

As town planners, we're privileged to have played a role in Greater Manchester's story. In fact, wherever you look, this great city's stories are still being written, and we're all part of the narrative.

So read on to explore these stories and join us as we consider how we can all influence the pages on which the next chapter of Greater Manchester's story will be written.

Themes

Planning

The town planning system is the mechanism by which this great city region shapes and reshapes itself, maintaining its status as the original modern city.

It's our bread and butter, and we know it well.

We're asking how planning reform can help address some of the key issues of our day and how to work with the system to unlock places and achieve transformation.

Places

Greater Manchester is more than the sum of its parts and all 10 places play a crucial role in making our great city region what it is.

We're lifting the lid on some of the key players in the city region to share the stories of their transformation and ask, what's next.

People

Places are nothing without the people who inhabit them and shape them.

And we work with some of the most passionate people who are shaping Greater Manchester's skyline today.

Euan Kellie Property Solutions would not be what it is today, without Donna, Ellie, Euan, James, Katie and Kelly. We're asking each to share their account on how the latest developments are impacting the people who call this place home.

Planning unlocked

Town planning may be red tape and rules to some, but to us it’s the way that transformation is realised. It’s the context in which actors on both sides of the table collaborate and create meaningful schemes.

And it’s the tool that us planners use to unlock problems.  It’s what we know and love.

Let us take you on a tour to show you how the planning system, despite all its foibles, is a powerful tool for change and something which we must support – and resource properly – to ensure it can achieve what it was established to do.

Places unlocked

Like many of Britain’s great industrial cities, Greater Manchester is a rich tapestry of places within places, each with its own stories of development and change.

A conurbation that grew up out of the Industrial Revolution, today it has a melting pot of influences. Alongside a globally-important commercial presence, its urban core now has a lively cultural and leisure scene, and an exploding residential population. Its satellite towns boast equal heritage value, with acres of potential for growth.

In EK Unlocked we’re digging deeper to uncover the stories of how – and why – the region has been so successful in rebuilding itself again and again.

We are Euan Kellie Property Solutions, a team of unapologetically-passionate planners who revere Greater Manchester's heritage and love unlocking and improving places.

Join us as we chat to James about his time working public sector side, and how it was to sit on the opposite side of the table to Euan.

Ellie and Kelly take us on a walk down memory lane as we explore how the housing crisis unfolded and how urban living has changed in the last 30 years.

And our antipodean friend, Katie, will reflect on what we can learn from planning down under to reform our planning system.

Greater Manchester
Manchester
The original settlement from which the sub-region takes its name, this is really a tale of two cities. Manchester’s boundary, drawn tightly against the River Irwell, means it functions co-dependently with Salford to form the city centre.

Manchester’s radical rebirth after the UK’s largest mainland bomb since World War Two is remarkable. But it is really a story about the people who made it happen. From the visionary politicians and council leaders who believed in the city’s potential. And the enterprising developers and sector experts who took risks and dreamed big.
Over the last decade the pace of transformation has continue to surge. It shows no signs of abating.

But there again, is a city ever complete?
